Purple shows 4.5 out of 5 from 29,547 reviews on its entry model. We read 777 Reddit posts and comments across 201 r/Mattress threads and kept the 246 written by owners.
Of the 212 who come down clearly, 81 would buy again and 131 would not.
That is 38 percent, and it is the low end of an honest range. A handful of unhappy owners reply several times inside their own threads, so counting one voice per person lifts it to 40, and one voice per thread lifts it to 45. Call it 38 to 45 and do not treat any of those figures as precise. No single thread carries the result: removing any one of the 201 moves it by at most one point.
We have not tested this mattress, we have not owned one, and nobody here has slept on one. We are analysts reading what owners wrote, which is why every number below arrives with its denominator.

How we read it
Every item was sorted by what the writer is to this mattress: somebody who owns one, somebody whose order is on the way, a shopper weighing it up, or a person repeating what they had heard. Only the first group is counted anywhere on this page.
Eight owner labels came out by hand, mostly showroom trials and people who had slept on a friend’s. Eleven threads came out whole, and they are worth naming because they would have flattered the brand: they are about Purple’s sheets, pillows and mattress protector, not its mattresses. Owners genuinely praise the SoftStretch sheets. That is not a verdict on a bed, so it is not counted as one.
Mention frequency in a self selected sample. Not a failure rate, and not a share of buyers. People with a problem write more often than people without one.
The exit is where owners get stuck
Ten themes came out of the corpus. On returns, exchanges and warranty, 8 owners are positive and 44 are negative. Nothing else on this page is that lopsided, and it is the one part of the reading where the brand’s own published terms explain the sentiment exactly.
The trial is 100 nights, of which 21 are compulsory before a return or exchange can be started, and only one exchange is allowed. What the policy does not do is name a price. It says the refund is the purchase price less discounts and transportation charges, and no figure appears anywhere on the page.
Owners report the figure. One who returned an original Purple near the end of the trial was told it would cost $150, and their objection is precise:
I acknowledged the refund fee was on me in my post, though I disagree they make it clear.

That is a fair way to put it, and it is the reason this section exists. A return fee is normal in this category and several rivals publish theirs. Here the fee is real and the number is not on the page, so a buyer works it out at the moment they have already decided to send the bed back.

The warranty turns on a dip the grid makes hard to photograph
Past the trial, the route is a 10 year warranty that recognises a defect when a dip exceeds 1.00 inch after the bed has fully recovered. Stains and unsanitary conditions void it, an unsuitable base voids it, and the terms state that removing the cover may void it too. After day 100, the transport cost of a repair or replacement falls on the owner.
The specific difficulty owners describe is not the threshold. It is proving it on this particular surface:

We are not going to leave that there, because another owner answered it in the same conversation with the opposite experience, and a page that only prints the complaint would be misleading:

Both accounts are in the corpus and both are counted. The case series below includes one owner who went through four Purple mattresses, with the first three replaced under warranty and no fight reported each time. When this brand’s service works, it works well. The complaints cluster on the paperwork and the pickup rather than on refusals.

The grid is not what divides people. Firmness is
This is the finding that surprised us, and it goes against the thing everyone says about this brand.
The gel grid is supposed to be the love it or hate it feature. In the corpus it is not. Owners who actually mention the grid come down positive 41 percent of the time, which is above the brand’s overall 38. Only six owners give the grid itself as their reason for rejecting the bed.
What does divide people is much more ordinary:
- 20 owners say it was too firm. Of those, 11 percent would buy again.
- 10 owners say it was too soft. Of those, 22 percent would buy again.
Firmness is also the most populated theme in the whole corpus, with 96 owners and a 34 to 52 split. The bed arrives firmer than buyers expect, and expectation is set before the box opens. One shopper in the corpus had the impression exactly backwards, calling Purple one of the softest brands available, which is not what its owners describe.
The consequence shows up on a one year clock rather than on night one:

The practical read. The owners who sound happiest in this corpus are repeatedly the ones who lay on the bed in a showroom first. That is unusual advice for a bed sold online, and it comes from the owners rather than from us.

Sleeping cool is the one promise the corpus backs
Every other theme on this page leans negative or splits. One does not.
On sleeping temperature, 26 owners weigh in and 18 of them are positive. It is the only theme of the ten where the good outweighs the bad, and it is the thing the brand has built its whole design story around. On a page whose headline number is unflattering, that deserves saying plainly.

It also holds up over time for some owners, which matters more than a first impression:

It is not universal. Eight owners report the opposite, and one of them was on a Rejuvenate, the most expensive family in the range. But if running hot is the problem you are trying to solve, this corpus is more encouraging on that than on anything else about the bed.

How it holds up, and when the complaints land
Sixty three owners talk about durability, splitting 20 positive to 42 negative. Thirty one owners describe sagging, a dip, an indent or a body impression, spread across 25 different threads, so this is not one loud conversation.
By stated tenure the curve is gentle rather than dramatic: owners between nought and three years are 41 percent positive across 74 accounts, and owners at four years and beyond are 29 percent across 24. The four to five year band is the weakest of all, but it rests on 13 accounts and we would not build an argument on it.
Thirty one owners out of 246 mentioning sagging is a frequency of mention in a self selected sample. It is not a failure rate and we will not turn it into one.

What this corpus cannot tell you
- No score by model, and this is the big one. 160 of the 246 owners do not name which Purple they own. They write my Purple. Three different naming schemes overlap in the corpus, from Purple 2, 3 and 4 through Hybrid Premier to today’s Restore and Rejuvenate families. Any per model ranking built on what is left would be arithmetic rather than evidence, so there is none on this page.
- Nothing at all on the Rejuvenate range. Ten clear owner verdicts, several of them weeks old. The brand itself shows between 48 and 66 reviews on those pages. Nobody has data on the $4,260 to $7,450 beds yet, us included.
- Nothing by weight. Only 31 clear verdicts state one, and the bands they form contradict each other. There is no heavy sleeper chapter on this page because there is no heavy sleeper data.
- Nothing on back or stomach sleepers. Two owners each. Side sleepers give 35 clear verdicts, which is the only position worth a count.
- No read on edge support, off gassing or anything else niche. One to three owners apiece.
- No time series. Half the corpus is from 2025 and 2026, and the handful of older posts are not a baseline.
The bottom line
Purple lands at 38 to 45 percent of owners saying they would buy again, which places it in the lower part of the brands we have read. The brand shows 4.3 to 4.8 across its range. Those are two different measurements of two different populations, and we are not claiming one of them is a lie.
Buy it if you sleep hot and that is the problem you are actually trying to solve. Cooling is the one claim this corpus supports, and it holds for some owners years in. Lie on one in a shop first if you possibly can, because the owners who did that are the ones who sound happy.
Think harder if you want a soft bed. The single most common regret here is a mattress that turned out firmer than expected, and the people who say that are the least likely of anyone in this corpus to buy again.
Whichever way you go, work out the return cost before you order rather than after. The trial is 100 nights, 21 of them are compulsory before you can start, and the fee that ends the story is not printed next to the price.
